How to track Google Maps rankings
Google Maps results change from street to street: a business can be #1 next door and missing a mile away. This tool lays a grid of points around the business and runs the Google Maps search as if a customer standing at each point searched on their phone. You get the rank at every point, who beats you there, and a heatmap you can send to a client.
- 1
Open the tool
Open Google Maps Rank Tracker on Apify and sign up free with Google or email.
- 2
Enter the keyword and business
Type what customers search for (for example "dentist") and the business, ideally with its Google Maps link.
- 3
Choose the grid
Pick the grid size (3×3 up to 15×15) and the distance between points.
- 4
Get the report
Press Start. A 7×7 grid takes about 15 seconds. Open the map report, or download the rows as Excel, CSV or JSON.
What data you get
One row per grid point. These are the columns in your download.
| Column | What it is | Example |

gridRow / gridCol | Position in the grid | 4 / 4 |
lat / lng | The point's location | 41.7729, -88.1479 |

topCompetitors | The top 3 businesses at that point | BONCI, Papa Ray's, … |
averageRank | Average rank where found (summary row) | 8.57 |
top3Percent | Share of points in the top 3 | 18.4 |
foundIn | Points where the business shows up | 44 / 49 |
imageUrl / reportUrl | Heatmap image and map report links | Public links |

Frequently asked questions
Is it the same as what I see on my phone?
Each point reproduces the Google Maps search for a person at that location. Google personalises results for signed-in users, so one person's phone can differ slightly. That's true for every rank tracker.
How much does it cost?
$0.01 per grid point: $0.09 for a 3×3 grid, $0.49 for a 7×7 grid, $2.25 for a 15×15 grid. No monthly plan, and failed points are never charged. Apify's free plan includes $5 of usage a month.
What does "20+" mean?
The business isn't in the first 20 results at that point. You can look deeper (top 40, 60 or 100) at the same price.
How far apart should the points be?
About 0.3 to 0.6 miles in dense cities, 1 to 2 miles in suburbs, 3 to 5 miles for service-area businesses like plumbers.
Can I run it every week?
Yes. Save the search as a task on Apify and add a weekly schedule. Send the report link to Slack or email with Make, Zapier or n8n.
Is it legal?
The tool reads public Google Maps search results, the same ones anyone sees. It doesn't log in and collects no personal data beyond business listings. It is not an official Google API.
