How can I check where my business ranks on Google Maps across a city?

Short answer

Use a geo-grid rank tracker. It places a grid of points around your business (for example 7×7, one mile apart) and runs the same Google Maps search as if a customer stood at each point. You get your rank at every point, who beats you there, and a heatmap. Our Google Maps Rank Tracker does this for $0.01 per point, so $0.49 for a 7×7 grid, with no monthly plan.

Why searching from your phone isn't enough

Google Maps ranks businesses mostly by distance, relevance and prominence, and distance depends on where the person searching is. You can be number 1 outside your door and missing two miles away. Searching from your own phone shows only one point, and Google also personalises results for signed-in users. A grid shows the whole picture at once.

What you get

  • Your rank at each grid point (or "20+" when you're not in the top 20)
  • The top 3 businesses at each point, and the 10 strongest competitors across the grid
  • Average rank, the share of points where you're in the top 3, and how many points you show up in
  • A heatmap image and an interactive map report you can send to a client

How to run it

  • Enter the keyword your customers use, for example "dentist" or "pizza near me".
  • Enter your business name, ideally with its Google Maps link so chains with many branches match exactly.
  • Pick the grid: 3×3 for a quick check, 7×7 for a normal report, 13×13 or 15×15 for a whole city.
  • Pick the spacing: about 0.3 to 0.6 miles in dense cities, 1 to 2 miles in suburbs, 3 to 5 miles for service-area businesses like plumbers.

How to read the results

A real example from our tests: "pizza near me" for a pizzeria in Naperville, Illinois, on a 7×7 grid one mile apart. The business ranked number 1 at the center, showed up in 44 of 49 points, was in the top 3 at 18% of points, and had an average rank of 8.6. The "20+" points at the edge show where competitors take the map. That's where reviews, local pages or a better Google Business Profile category can help.

What it costs

$0.09 for a 3×3 grid, $0.49 for 7×7, $2.25 for 15×15. Failed points are never charged. A weekly 7×7 report for one keyword costs about $2 a month.

Questions

How is this different from Local Falcon or BrightLocal?

It produces the same kind of geo-grid report, but you pay per point instead of a monthly plan, and you get the raw data as Excel, CSV or JSON.

Can I track several keywords?

Yes. Add several keywords in one run. Each keyword gets its own grid and is priced as its own grid.

Can I run it every week?

Yes. Save the search as a task on Apify and add a weekly schedule, then send the report link to Slack or email with Make, Zapier or n8n.

Will the results match my phone exactly?

Each point reproduces the search for a person at that location. Google personalises results for signed-in users, so one person's phone can differ slightly. That's true for every rank tracker.
